Voting Rights Act (1965)
August 6, 1965
The Voting Rights Act was passed August 6, 1965 and it prohibited literacy tests and other discriminatory voting practices from being used to stop African American men from voting. LBJ made civil rights one of his top proprieties while he was president. He passed the 24th Amendment, The Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. Unfortunately even after this law was passed, some states in the South disobeyed it and harassed and tried to harm African American men if they tried to register to vote.
